The RISE in STEM pilot program proposes to redesign three gateway courses at IAUPR-PC and IAUPR-BC by implementing modular course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) in a collaborative setting in physics, chemistry and biology laboratory sections. This pilot program will engage students at the beginning of their academic career in a multi-campus, multi-faculty, multi-peer leader research experience combined with academic advisement and additional activities such as research dissemination as mechanisms for improving student perceptions and performance at IAUPR (NSF award 2114401).

In the RISE in STEM Program students will conduct authentic research using materials science as a vector, which will serve as the perfect bridge between varying science majors and engineering. The novel work students have completed will be reported in this webpage.

High school students from the north and south of Puerto Rico will be invited to participate in the program’s RISE in STEM mini-symposium every semester and a hands-on workshop related to materials science will be offered.
